Meinert names her final European Championship squad

Maren Meinert has named her squad for the Women’s European U19 Championship this summer. The Germany coach will take 18 players to the finals, which will be held between 11th and 28th July in Israel. While there, the DFB-Team will face England in Rishon LeZion on 15th July (18:30 CEST) and Norway in Lod on 18th July (18:30 CEST), before rounding off the group phase against Spain in Rishon LeZion once more on 21st July (18:30 CEST).

Meinert has gone for experience with her squad selection. There are no new faces, while five players have already won at least ten caps at U19 level - Rebecca Knaak of Bayer Leverkusen, Turbine Potsdam’s Felicitas Rauch, Madeline Gier of SGS Essen (11 each), Meppen’s Rieke Dieckmann and Jenny Gaugigl of Bayern München (both 10). There are plenty of goals in the striking department too, with Gier and Laura Freigang (TSV Schott) having already netted seven times each.

Training camp in Hennef, then it’s off to Israel

However, before Germany make their way to the airport and begin their journey to Herzliya where the finals will take place, Meinert’s girls will take part in a training camp between 28th June and 1st July. The finishing touches to their European Championship preparations will be made in Hennef, before the DFB-Team look to realise their dream of winning the silverware.

With six titles to their name, Germany are the record European champions at women’s U19 level. Their last success was four years ago though, when the likes of Leonie Maier, Lena Lotzen and Jennifer Cramer brought the trophy home from Italy – all three of those players are currently with the senior women’s team in Canada aiming to lift Germany’s third World Cup.
