Grindel: "Silver is a big success"

The DFB-Team fulfilled their dream of winning a medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but came up short for the Gold as hosts Brazil claimed victory in the final courtesy of a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win.

Horst Hrubesch’s men received various congratulatory messages from DFB President Reinhard Grindel and Germany coach Joachim Löw for example. DFB.de collected these reactions.

DFB President Reinhard Grindel: The team had a fantastic tournament. In a short period of time they managed to form a real team. Their morale and great character was displayed in each of their games. The silver medal is also a big success. I'm personally very happy that the team was able to give their coach a successful final tournament. I congratulate Brazil sincerely on winning the gold medal. For them, it is likely a type of gratification for the semi-final defeat in 2014.

DFB General Secretary Dr. Friedrich Curtius: For the DFB, winning the men's silver medal and the women's gold medal is a huge success at these Olympic Games. Horst Hrubesch’s team faced the difficult conditions and already made history by securing their place in this dream final with the hosts. I'm especially happy for Horst Hrubesch, who has made a lasting contribution here at the DFB during his 16-year-long career. Receiving the Olympic silver medal during his last competition in charge is a crowning glory.

DFB Sporting Director Hansi Flick: Congratulations to Brazil. We have every reason to celebrate this silver medal. The way the team fought themselves into this tournament, how they formed to become a unit, was simply amazing. You could see their development from game to game. We've achieved something with this silver medal victory, that hasn't been done before and no one thought the team was capable of doing. I'm extremely proud of this team.

Germany coach Joachim Löw: What a dramatic final. Naturally you need a bit of luck when it comes to a penalty shoot-out and Brazil had that today. Congratulations to them. Despite the disappointment, Germany didn’t lose the gold medal but instead won silver. It's a huge success and I can only congratulate them for it. I'm very happy for Horst Hrubesch, as he crowns his career by winning this Olympic medal. Everyone knows what the Olympic Games mean to him and it's a sensational conclusion for his coaching career. He will be missed by us at the DFB. Our team showed incredible morale and great unity throughout the entire tournament. I do think that a few of the players have the potential to play in the first team and some of them have been with us already. Every single one of them profited from the experience of being in Brazil.

National team manager Oliver Bierhoff: Despite this extremely close defeat in the final, our team were great representatives of Germany at the Olympic Games. It's absolutely impressive how Horst Hrubesch, the entire coaching staff, every single player, our Sporting Director Hansi Flick and the entire team behind the team have managed to represent German football in Brazil. Congratulations on winning the silver medal and congratulations to Brazil for winning gold.
