Charity friendly in Augsburg on 29th May

Germany will warm up for the EUROs in France with two friendlies on home soil. The DFB have chosen Augsburg as the host for the match on 29th May, and have also decided that it will be a charity match. The game will be organised by the DFB’s Egidius Braun Foundation, with all proceeds going to foundations of the DFB and the League Association. The opponent and kick-off time have not yet been confirmed.

Staging charity friendlies has been a tradition since 1996 and has played a central role in financing charitable projects. The most recent charity friendly was on 6th June 2014, when Germany beat Armenia 6-1 in Mainz as they began preparations for the World Cup in Brazil. The profits from merchandising and tickets will this year also be partially distributed to DFB foundations and the Bundesliga Foundation. The Robert Enke and Fritz Walter Foundations will also receive financial donations.

Grindel: "Charity matches a wonderful tradition"

DFB treasurer Reinhard Grindel says, “It is a wonderful tradition that our team continues to come together in these charity matches with great enthusiasm for good causes. We are unique in hosting regular charity matches like this and they make real offers of help possible. The income from these matches ensures that the foundations can continue their social responsibilities and do good.”

Germany’s final warm up before the EUROs will take place on 4th June in Gelsenkirchen (kick-off time to be confirmed). “It was important to us that we arrange two home games in preparation for the EUROs,” says Oliver Bierhoff, general manager of the national team. “It is about the team warming up for the tournament but we also want to gain the necessary momentum from our fans that we will need in France. It goes without saying that our goal is to be playing in the final in Paris on 10th July and then also to win it.”

The DFB has also confirmed the locations for home matches in the second half of 2016. After the EUROs, a friendly will be staged in Mönchengladbach on either 31st August or 1st September. Germany also play two home games in World Cup qualifiers for Russia 2018: the game against the Czech Republic on 8th October has been confirmed in Hamburg, whilst Northern Ireland will travel to Hannover on 11th October.
