U19s Women begin Euros with 2-1 win over England

Germany U19 Women have got their European campaign off to a successful start in Israel thanks to a late strike from captain Rebecca Knaak. That gave Maren Meinert’s team a 2-1 win over England. Nina Ehegötz put Germany into the lead in the 25th minute before Gabrielle George equalised only minutes later. Knaak’s goal made sure of the win shortly before the end.

In the other game in Group B, Spain beat Norway 4-0, which puts Spain top of the group on three points ahead of Germany on goal difference. England and Norway are third and fourth respectively with no points.

“It was an even and competitive game for the whole 90 minutes. In the end we were the somewhat fortunate winners because of the late goal, but we worked very hard for this success against a strong English team,” said coach Meinert in summary.

Ehegötz for the lead, George with the quick reply

Lea Schüller set up the opening goal in Rishon LeZion. After winning the ball, the midfielder served her teammate Nina Ehegötz who found herself with time and space to put the ball past keeper Caitlin Leach. England didn’t, however, waste any time in replying, as Gabrielle George found the equaliser shortly afterwards.

In a game with few chances, it seemed that neither team would be able to find another goal. Only in the dying moments of the game did Knaak find herself on the end of substitute Madeline Gier’s corner to secure the win for Germany.

The next opposition for Meinert’s team is Norway on Saturday (16:30 CEST), before they play Spain on Tuesday (18:30 CEST).

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals. Progress is success in itself because the teams that qualify for the knock-out phase will also qualify for the U20 World Cup in 2016.
