U19 women win the group with a goal fest

The U19 DFB women’s team have booked their place at the second round of qualification for the European Championship with another emphatic victory. DFB manager Maren Meinert’s team won their last first round group game in Szombathely, Hungary against Serbia 6-1and won the group of four without dropping a single point.

"The tournament was a formality for us really: Just something we had to get through. The important thing is that we played better today, so I’m pleased," said Meinert after the game.

Midfielder Ricarda Walkling scored twice in the opening ten minutes to give her team a comfortable early lead. Stefanie Sanders and Melanie Ott both got their names on the score sheet in time for the half-way mark. Sanders scored again ten minutes after the break before substitute Viktoria Schwalm put the icing on the cake in stoppage time. Kristina Pantelic pulled a goal back for Serbia in the 57th minute.

Meinert: "We had to get used to the U19 standards"

"We had to get used to the U19 standards first," said Meinert who is looking ahead to the second round of qualification with confidence. In the other game, the hosts Hungary grabbed second place with a 5-0 win over Kazakhstan.

The groups for the second and deciding European Championship qualification round will be drawn on the 10th December 2015. The seven best teams will qualify for the finals in July in Slovakia where the hosts will be the eighth team. The DFB youth women’s team last took home the European Championship trophy in 2011 from Italy.
