Meinert names 18 players for European Under-19 Championship in Slovakia

Germany manager Maren Meinert has named her squad for the women’s European Under-19 Championship, set to take place from 19th-31st July. The 18-strong squad will travel to Slovakia on 15th July.

Due to the fact that there is also a Under-20 World Cup taking place in Papua New Guinea (6th November - 4th December 2016) after the European Under-19 Championship, the coaching staff were faced with a difficult decision. "Selecting the squad wasn’t easy," said Meinert. "We were looking at lots of players from the 1998 age group and wanted to give them a chance to participate in a major tournament in order to continue to build for the future. Other players in the older age bracket should be recommended for the World Cup. It was ultimately a very close call. Now we hope that these 18 players will perform strongly in Slovakia."

Several players already have European Championship experience

Several players are also nominated, who took part in the European Championship in Israel last year. Back then, Germany reached the semi-finals but lost out on penalties to Sweden. Meinert: "The players who were in Israel are very important for the team because they obviously bring a great deal of experience with them. Additionally, we’re optimistic that they have also made clear further development."

Germany will travel to Trnava on 15th July. They face Spain in their first group game just four days later on 19th July (18:00 CEST). Meinert’s side will also play Switzerland on 22nd July (18:00 CEST) and Austria on 25th July (18:00 CEST).
