Germany U19s suffer 2-0 defeat to Norway

The DFB Team U19s suffered a 2-0 defeat to Norway in their second group game of the European Championships. Maren Meinert’s side now need a positive result against table toppers Spain on Tuesday (18:30 CEST) if they want to reach the semis, which also see them qualify for the U20 World Cup in 2016.

Germany and Norway are currently level on points in second place behind Spain, who have won both of their matches so far. England are last with zero points. Should both Germany and Norway win their last game, goal difference will decide who reaches the semi-final.

"We will now take a moment and collect our thoughts and then hopefully secure a victory against Spain," said Meinert after the defeat against Norway. "I really can't blame to my players for the defeat today. We even had slight advantages and created good opportunities. We struggled a bit after conceding the early goal and it was difficult to find the right balance between attacking and keeping an organised defence. However, there isn’t room for excuses after a 2-0 defeat."

Norway take an early lead

The game against the robust Norwegian side started off in a far from ideal manner: Five minutes into the game the DFB Team were already trailing the Scandinavians. Vilde Fjelldal bagged the opener and left Germany stunned as they struggled to recover from the early blow. An unfortunate own goal from Rebecca Knaak shortly after the half-hour mark doubled Germany's handicap.

But the DFB team came out stronger in the second half and managed to create good chances through Nina Ehegötz and Rieke Dieckmann, who struck the woodwork with her attempt midway through the second half. Germany continued to control the game in the second half but were unable to reduce Norway's lead.

France and Sweden have already qualified for the semi-finals from Group A. France secured a comfortable 4-0 win over Iceland, while Sweden recorded a narrow 1-0 win against Denmark.
