U16s kick off UEFA tournament against Portugal

Germany U16s started their journey to southern Portugal for the UEFA tournament on Monday. Christian Wück’s side face hosts Portugal at 12:00 CET, before playing France (Saturday, 17:00 CET) and the Netherlands (Monday, 15:00 CET) in the coming days. All games will take place in Vila Real Santo Antonio.

"With five wins from six games, we’ve started the year well," said Wück. "Now we face Portugal, France and the Netherlands, who are all a level above our previous opponents. We are looking forward to the games, and are excited to see how our boys play."

Wück: "We have our first choice squad with us in Portugal"

Goalkeeper Christian Früchtl, the young Bayern München keeper who was invited to join in the first team training camp in Doha, has travelled with the squad. Up front, Wück has placed his trust in Nicolas-Gerrit Kühn and Kilian Ludewig of RB Leipzig. They are providing four players in total, Bayer Leverkusen three, and two from both Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg. There are 22 players overall, with 13 in the reserves should they be required.

"We don’t have any drop outs or injuries, and so have our first choice squad with us in Portugal," said Wück. "We will use the three games to try a few things out. What positions can each player play? Who plays well with whom?" Interesting questions, the answers to which will be revealed in Portugal.
