World XI: Boateng, Hummels and Lahm shortlisted

World Cup winners Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Jerome Boateng and the now retired, former Germany skipper Philipp Lahm (both FC Bayern München) have made the shortlist of defenders for FIFA’s Team of the Year. The German trio and 17 other defenders, including Austria’s David Alaba (FC Bayern), are in contention for four spots in the World XI. Lahm also made the shortlist for FIFA World Player of the Year 2014.

The Team of the Year is compiled of players from around the world. Tens of thousands of professional footballers will cast their votes. They vote for one keeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. The finalists are suggested by the World Footballers’ Association FIFPro and by FIFA.

The eleven winners will be announced on January 12th 2015 at Zurich’s Congress House. World Goalkeeper of the Year Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern) was already nominated for the position of keeper on Monday. World Cup winners Neuer and Lahm made the 2013 Team of the Year.
