World Champions honoured in Berlin

Another honour for the World Champions: Joachim Gauck, President of Germany, bestowed another honour upon the World Cup winning players and Joachim Löw’s coaching squad for their stunning performances in Brazil. The team, led by then captain Philipp Lahm, received the Silbernen Lorbeerblatt (Silver Laurel Leaf – the highest sports award in Germany) in a ceremony in Bellevue Palace.

"Winning the World Cup is the most coveted and biggest title in football,” said President Gauck in his speech. “We all felt part of the triumph this summer and on behalf of everyone in Germany I would like to say: Thank you!”

“What a stunning victory. What a strong yet humble team, one which manages to balance humanity with sporting capability,” said Gauck when speaking about the team who won in Brazil. “Our team has been recognised globally. We can be happy that no one is begrudging our success, the whole world is on our side.”

The President also spoke about his delight at the successful youth programmes in German football. “The great youth schemes put in place by the associations and the clubs shouldn’t go unrecognised. The coaches of youth teams across the country deserve appreciation.”

Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, was also present at the event, which saw the DFB receive the World Champions badge from FIFA.
