Wolfsburg win 5-3 in spectacle - Gladbach also triumphant

VfL Wolfsburg won 5-3 against Werder Bremen to sign off matchday 23 of the Bundesliga. The Wolves, who are still eight points adrift of table toppers Bayern München, turned around a half-time deficit in a matter of minutes to extend a club record: Eleven undefeated games on the spin. Before that, Borussia Mönchengladbach came out on top 2-0 against newly-promoted SC Paderborn and now have a four-point cushion to third-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Goals from US international Fabian Johnson and Patrick Herrmann secured the Goals’ first win following a Europa League match.

Fans that left it late to get to the stadium would have been kicking themselves as goals from Zlatko Junuzovic and Franco di Santo, sandwiched between a Daniel Caligiuri goal made it 2-1 to Bremen after 16 minutes. Maximilian Arnold then equalised for the Wolves two minutes later. Felix Kroos then capitalised on a Vieirinha mistake to restore the hosts’ lead at the break.

The second half began just as turbulent as the first. VfL took their chances excellently as striker Bas Dost turned the game on its head with a brace in three minutes, before Caligiuri increased the lead with his second goal of the game and Wolfsburg’s third in five minutes to make it 5-3. Never before in German top-flight history has a side scored three goals in the first eight minutes of the first half. Werder tried to fight back through a Junuzovic free kick late on but VfL keeper Diego Benaglio ensured that a memorable Wolfsburg win.

Borussia finally win following a Europa League game

The guests enjoyed the better start with Alban Meha and Srdjan Lakic both having chances within the opening exchanges. It was Gladbach who took the lead though when Johnson released shot from 18 metres out that took a cruel deflection off SC defender Patrick Siegler, evading keeper Lukas Kruse.

Borussia had numerous chances after the break but failed to double their lead until the closing stages when Patrick Herrmann’s left-footed shot was again deflected, this time by Meha, to secure all three points for the Foals.
