Wolfsburg want to go top in Herford

VfL Wolfsburg can go top of the table of the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga on matchday 9. The German champions and Champions League holders play newly-promoted and bottom of the table Herforder SV today (14:00 CET). The undefeated Wolves are in second place behind leaders FC Bayern München, but only due to the fact that they are four goals behind on goal difference (both teams have 20 points).

Last weekend, Ralf Kellermann’s side advanced to the quarter finals of the DFB cup with a comfortable 8-0 win over second division side BV Cloppenburg. “Our forwards picked up a lot of confidence thanks to all the goals,” said Kellermann.

Herford also made it through to the last eight win a 4-0 win against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. But in the league, manager Jürgen Prüfer and his side are still searching for their first three points of the season. “I wasn’t unhappy with the first half against Potsdam,” said Prüfer, who’s team have never won a competitive game against Wolfsburg (four losses from four games). “Therefore, we made it difficult for our opponents.”

Sasic against Starke: Battle of the goal scorers in Frankfurt

Also today (kick-off 18:30 CET), DFB cup holders 1. FFC Frankfurt will be looking to win their sixth game in a row when they take on SC Freiburg. “We’re looking forward to our first game under floodlights at the stadium in Brentanobad,” said FFC Chief Executive Siegfried Dietrich. Manager Colin Bell and his Frankfurt team have a good record against Freiburg, winning 19 of the 26 games between the two sides, drawing three, and losing only four. In the DFB cup, FFC made it through to the quarter finals with a 3-0 win over league rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Frankfurt defender Laura Störzel moved from Freiburg to FFC only a few weeks ago.

Freiburg travel to Frankfurt with momentum after beating second division side 1. FFC Niederkirchen 6-0 in the DFB cup. SCF manager Dietmar Sehrig and his side returned to good form after their heaviest defeat of the season last time out, as they lost 4-1 to SGS Essen. The game in Frankfurt will also see the two best goal scorers in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga at the moment go up against each other: Frankfurt’s Celia Sasic and Freiburg’s Sandra Starke lead the scoring charts with seven goals each.

Next weekend, both VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FFC Frankfurt will be in Champions League action. FFC will play the first leg of their last 16 tie against Italian side Torres Calcio Sassari on Sunday (13:00 CET), whilst Wolfsburg will host Austrian side SV Neulengbach at 14:00 CET on Sunday. Both second legs will be played on Wednesday 12th November.
