Wolfsburg Stronghold – Three games, zero goals conceded

The quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal are coming up on 6th and 7th February. An effective Mainz defence, a powerful back-line in Wolfsburg and Heynckes is hot on Udo Lattek’s heels. DFB.de have put together the important facts from the four ties.

A hard nut to crack: After three wins and clean sheets in the first three rounds, the Wolves are the only team this season to have not conceded in the cup.

Hot on Lattek’s heels: Jupp Heynckes will be in the dugout for his 75th DFB-Pokal game for the quarter-final next Tuesday. If the head coach reaches the final with Bayern this season, then he will overtake Udo Lattek (76 cup ties) and so will have managed the second-most DFB-Pokal ties in the competition’s history. Otto Rehhagel occupies the top spot, having overseen 92 DFB-Pokal ties.

An impressive quarter-final record: FC Bayern have won their last eight quarter-finals and the last seven, Bayern have won without conceding. The last goal that the record cup champions conceded at this stage was in 2010 in a 6-2 home win against Greuther Fürth. Sami Allagui drove the ball home that day against Bayern keeper Michael Rensing and gave the underdogs a 2-1 lead at half time.

The 3. Liga shows us how it’s done: Paderborn are now the fifth team from the third division in the last eight years to reach the quarter-finals. Bielefeld reached the semi-finals in the 2014/15 season before losing 4-0 to the winners that year, VfL Wolfsburg.

24: FC Bayern have won every one of their last 24 away DFB-Pokal ties and will look to continue to build on that record. The last away loss that Bayern suffered in the cup was back in March 2009 when they lost 4-2 in the quarter-finals to Bayer 04 Leverkusen under Jürgen Klinsmann.

The duel of the sporting directors: Paderborn have met FC Bayern three times in competitive matches (3 losses, 15-1 aggregate scoreline) and one of those meetings was in the DFB-Pokal first round in the 2001/02 season when they were in the third division. The game was played in Bielefeld and FC Bayern triumphed 5.1 (Goals: Jancker, Santa Cruz, Zickler x2, N. Kovac – Karpowicz). The sporting directors of both clubs today were on opposing sides that day – Markus Krösche and Hasan Salihamidzic.

13 goals conceded: Werder Bremen are Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s worst enemy in the DFB-Pokal. The Rhineland side have lost all six of their previous cup ties against Werder. Leverkusen have also conceded more goals in the cup against Werder than against any other team (13 goals).

It’s been a while: Werder have a pretty good record in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal, winning nine of their last ten games at this stage. The last time Werder were knocked out at this stage was in 2006, when they lost 3-1 against St. Pauli.

A third-division duel last season: Heiko Herrlich (Regensburg) and Florian Kohfeldt (Werder U23s) met in the 3. Liga last season. Meanwhile the Bundesliga match between the two came on Matchday 16 this season which saw Leverkusen beat Werder 1-0.

The top scorer battle: Sebastian Haller is the competition’s top scorer so far this season with four goals and in total six scoring points (four goals, two assists). In second place in that ranking is Mainz’s Daniel Brosinski with five points (two goals, three assists).

The only DFB-Pokal match between the two: Mainz lost the only Rhein-Main derby in the DFB-Pokal – in the second round of the 1986/87 edition, the Zerofivers, who were in the third division at the time, lost to Frankfurt, who were in the Bundesliga, 1-0 after extra-time with Reinhold Jessl getting the goal.

Three men against their former club: Schalke 04 have three former Wolfsburg players in their ranks, in Naldo, Daniel Caligiuri and Sascha Riether. Riether won the Bundesliga with VfL in 2009.
