Wolfsburg march into the second round

Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg beat FSV Frankfurt 2-1 on Saturday night to book themselves a spot in round two of the 2016/17 DFB Cup. New signing Mario Gomez wasn’t involved in the fixture.

"We played really well before the break but struggled in the second period," explained sporting director Klaus Allofs, “however, the season has only just started so there’s no need for concern."

Four new signings start

The Wolves took the lead after just five minutes when Steffen Schäfer put through his own net. Bas Dost doubled the advantage soon after (16’). VfL continued to press but were unable to grab a third goal. The hosts got one back shortly after the interval via Fabian Schleusener.

Daniel Didavi, Jeffrey Bruma, Yannick Gerhardt and Jakub Blaszczykowski made their debuts in the game. Gomez picked up a knock at EURO 2016 but is likely to start training next week. He is not expected to make his debut for Wolfsburg until after September’s international break.
