Wolfsburg beat Hertha as Dost does it again

VfL Wolfsburg have solidified their status as the second-best team in the Bundesliga. The Wolves won 2-1 against Hertha BSC on matchday 22, increasing their lead over third place to ten points after Gladbach drew with HSV earlier in the day.

Wolfsburg were on the front foot from the start against Hertha and opened the scoring with the first chance of the game. A cross from Vieirinha was brilliantly nodded on by World Champion André Schürrle and Bas Dost rounded off the move with a composed finish past Thomas Kraft. With a goal behind them, VfL were the side in command on the pitch, but struggled to create further goalscoring opportunities. That proved costly when Julian Schieber headed in Valentin Stocker’s cross after half an hour and the sides went in level at the break.

Dost at the double

There was only one team playing after the restart though. Wolfsburg piled the pressure on the visitors from Berlin, with Kevin De Bruyne and Schürrle both coming close to restoring their lead. Then a pot shot from Luiz Gustavo in the 73rd minute rattled back of the post and Dost reacted quickest to slot home the rebound. Hertha were unable to muster another response and were ultimately lucky to come away losing only 2-1. The defeat ensures that the capital club remain 17th in the table, deep in the relegation battle.
