Wolfsburg and Bayern both earn victories

Both VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern München’s women’s teams won their first matches of the first knock-out round of the Women’s Champions League this evening. Both teams have a good chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals. VfL Wolfsburg beat Chelsea FC 3-0 whilst last season’s league winners FC Bayern München celebrated a 6-0 win over Hibernian FC Ladies in Scotland.

Zsanett Jakabfi (12’, 39’, 54’) scored all three goals for VfL Wolfsburg to secure the victory. Stefanie van der Gragt (6’), Vivianne Miedema (26’, 57’), Melanie Leupolz (38’, 63’) and former Germany international Melanie Behringer (67’, penalty) all got on the scoresheet for FC Bayern München.

Six Germany internationals in the VfL starting eleven

VfL Wolfsburg had six Germany internationals in their starting eleven and the team dominated the match in London. Chelsea rarely looked threatening upfront as the Wolfsburg back line, consisting of goalkeeper Almuth Schmult and defnders Babett Peter, Lene Goeßling and Isabel Kerschowski played so well. Meanwhile, strikers Alexandra Popp and Anna Blässe posed a real threat upfront.

Germany international Isabel Kerschowski provided the assist for Jakabfi’s opener, whilst Lara Dickenmann provided the cross for the second goal. Caroline Hansen set up Wolfsburg’s third goal in the second half of the match. Anja Mittag, another Germany women’s international, came on to replace Jakabfi in the 72nd minute.

Melanie Leupolz scores a brace

FC Bayern München dominated the match against Hibernian FC ladies in Edinburgh. Despite having only won two matches in the league so far this season, FC Bayern München found their feet straightaway in the match against Hibernian FC ladies. Verene Faißt provided the assist for defender van der Gragt who scored the early goal. Miedema and Leupolz scored to make it 3-0 before half-time. The same duo also scored goals in the second half before Behringer scored the winning goal to end the game 6-0.

Head coach Wörle brought on Nicole Rolser and U20 women’s international Anna Gerhardt in the 65th minute to replace Miedema and Faißt. Rolser had the opportunity to make it 7-0 in the 83rd minute but she failed to score from the penalty spot.
