Wörle: "Pleased with a point against the best team in Europe"

Few goal scoring opportunities but, tactically and physically, a game of the highest standard – the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga top of the table clash between Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg was just as fans expected. Following the 0-0 draw, Wolfsburg remain top of the table with Bayern München just behind the two-time winners. Frankfurt and Potsdam are still in touch with the top two so it’s going to be a dramatic end to the season.

In an interview with DFB.de, Bayern manager Thomas Wörle reflects upon the match with Wolfsburg and looks ahead to the home game this Sunday (14.00 CET) against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

DFB.de: Mr Wörle, it finished 0-0 in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga top of the table clash against VfL Wolfsburg. Are you pleased with the result?

Thomas Wörle: Absolutely, we’re very pleased with the result. We obviously would have liked to win but we can live with that point. We played against an extremely strong opponent. Wolfsburg are the best team in Europe.

DFB.de: But honestly, are you not a bit sad that you missed out on the chance to go top?

Wörle: No, we’re not so presumptuous. We all know very well that Wolfsburg have rightly held this position. VfL, with their squad and the club facilities, belong at the top of the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga table. We would obviously have liked to take the opportunity to overtake them but also would have settled for a draw beforehand. However, like I already said, a draw is perfectly fine. We are very proud that we haven’t lost to Wolfsburg again.

DFB.de: Was it an even game?

Wörle: Yes, I would say that. We wanted to make it as difficult as possible for Wolfsburg and didn’t want to come away from the game defeated. We achieved our goal.

DFB.de: Was it an even game?

Wörle: Yes, I would say that. We wanted to make it as difficult as possible for Wolfsburg and didn’t want to come away from the game defeated. We achieved our goal.

DFB.de: There were no goals scored, just like in the game in the first half of the season. Does this show that the two teams are both very tactically astute?

Wörle: Yes, that’s a good description. Due to the playing surface, it was hard and there were only a few goal scoring chances overall. It was an intense and tight game in which both teams defended very well. In the closing stages, we had a little bit of luck on our side but we worked hard over the 90 minutes.

DFB.de: The last third of the season is under way. What’s your aim: the title or Champions League qualification?

Wörle: It’s primarily about focussing and preparing for our next game on Sunday against Leverkusen. We are, however, obviously very happy to be second in the table. We’re certainly not going to give up this position without a fight.

DFB.de: And Bayer 04 Leverkusen...

Wörle: ... we’re not going to underestimate them.

DFB.de: Following the highlight of the Wolfsburg game, is it going to be difficult to raise the excitement levels again?

Wörle: We have to manage it; that’s the main aim for this week. In the past few days, everything was focused on the Wolfsburg game. It’s clear that the excitement levels are going to dip following the top of the table encounter. There’s no way we should underestimate Leverkusen though. Despite their defeat to Wolfsburg, they’ve performed well for a long time and they were convincing 3-0 winners against Herford on Sunday. We’re aware of the threat they pose.

DFB.de: What makes your team so strong this season? Is it the outstanding defence?

Wörle: That is certainly an important element. The whole team work well when pressing the ball which gives our game stability. Additionally, we have an outstanding team spirit so we can deal with the loss of one or two players and give as good as we get against strong opposition like Wolfsburg.

DFB.de: Did you imagine before the season began that you would be so successful so quickly?

Wörle: No, we hadn’t expected it. We signed players with potential but we’ve simply had a lucky break. The fact that everything has come together so quickly shows the team’s character and development. It’s still, however, an ongoing process and we will continue to work hard every day.
