Who is your "2017 National Player of the Year"?

The Germany national team can once again look back on a very successful year, the highlight being the Confed Cup title in July. But the results were also remarkable – the team picked up 11 wins and four draws in 2017, which forms part of Germany’s current run of 21 matches without a loss. The foundation of this success is without doubt the team’s strong performances. Therefore, the Fan Club Nationalmannschaft powered by Coca-Cola would like you to vote for the player you think has particularly come on in 2017. Vote now for your player of the year.

Team of the Year nominated

A starting XI has been chosen, consisting of the players who played the most minutes in 2017 for Germany. Joshua Kimmich has played the most minutes with 1,260 to his name and went the full distance in 14 of 15 internationals. National coach Joachim Löw only rested him against France. Julian Draxler, who led the team as captain to the Confed Cup title, featured in 13 matches and played 1,024 minutes.

Marc-André ter Stegen, Jonas Hector and Lars Stindl all featured in ten games for Germany, while Antonio Rüdiger made eleven appearances. Top goalscorer Timo Werner scored seven goals in ten games and Leon Goretzka made nine appearances. Sebastian Rudy made twelve appearances and Matthias Ginter made eight. Emre Can featured in 13 of the 15 matches.

Why Özil and Co. are missing

The nominations for national player of the year 2017 were particularly difficult to select this year because Löw gave 37 players gametime in 15 matches in 2017. This high number of players is due to, amongst other reasons, the fact that several 2014 World Cup winners were not selected for the Confed Cup and several young players were handed a chance to prove themselves in Russia. The established regulars in the team were therefore not given the gametime to appear as a candidate for the Fan Club vote.

This means that, among others, five-time national player of the year Mesut Özil is not up for selection, along with Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller. The fact that they have not been nominated is in no way critical of their performances; they simply lacked sufficient gametime in 2017.

The vote for national player of the year will run until Friday 19th January 2018 at 12 noon (CET). Everyone is invited to vote! Every vote counts! Simply click here and make you pick – done!
