"Where it began for the Captain": Story started in Gern

The biggest title didn’t go to Germany. In fact, Belgium are the World Champions. And Lahm is to blame. The Belgian success is thanks to Daniela Lahm’s initiative. Who, what, why?

Here’s the story: Daniela Lahm is Philipp Lahm’s mother. She has a leadership role at Freien Turnerschaft Gern, the club at which her son Philipp got his first taste of competitive football. As part of her position she ensured that a lovely local tradition didn’t die out: A mini World Cup tournament. For more than 20 years, youth teams from the north of Munich play tournaments which run parallel to some of the biggest ones in world football.

The tournament is traditionally hosted by VfR Garching, however, for a number of reasons they were unable to hold the tournament this year – but the players and clubs still wanted to play. Enter Daniela Lahm. The hosting of the tournament was under threat yet she went the extra mile to ensure it happened: Thanks to her work everything was taken control of and her club hosted the event. She simply wouldn’t take no for an answer.
