Werner scores in Leipzig's 2-2 draw with Augsburg

RB Leipzig recorded a 2-2 draw with Augsburg on matchday 23 of the Bundesliga. Konstantinos Stafylidis gave the hosts the lead in the 19th minute, only for Timo Werner to equalise for Leipzig in the 25th. After the break, Marvin Compper put the visitors ahead on 52 minutes, but Martin Hinteregger salvaged a draw for Augsburg with an hour gone.

Stafylidis scores wonder goal, Werner strikes back

After Augsburg’s early pressure resulting in a shot from Dong-Won Ji in the first minute, Leipzig took control of the game. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men were without the injured attacking player Yussuf Poulsen and could not break through in the opening stages.

The opener for Augsburg came out of nothing when Stafylidis hit a venomous shot from 30 yards into the top corner. Shortly after, however, a precise through ball from Naby Keita put Werner through on goal and the German made no mistake.

Hinteregger halts Leipzig momentum

RB put immediate pressure on Augsburg at the start of the second half. Emil Forsberg forced a save out of Marwin Hitz. Danso, who had a good game cleared a cross from Marcel Sabitzer. Shortly afterwards, Leipzig went 2-1 up as Compper headed in from a corner. At the other end, Diego Demme almost caught out his own goalkeeper with a wayward back pass.

On the hour mark, Augsburg were able to get in behind Leipzig as a fast counter attack was calmly finished off by Hinteregger, as he ran through and held his nerve brilliantly to slot the ball past the Leipzig keeper.

Leipzig kept believing and U21 German International Werner should have put them 3-2 ahead as he stretched to convert Sabitzer’s square ball, but the pass eluded him by centimetres. In the 87th minute, Augsburg almost won it, but Stafylidis’ shot smashed against the post.
