Wener nets as Stuttgart win

György Garics’ own goal (68’) and a late strike from Germany U21 star Timo Werner (90’+4) helped VfB Stuttgart to their second home win of the season. The result means that Darmstadt have lost on the road for the first time since returning to the Bundesliga this summer.

Garics headed part his own keeper after a sumptuous cross from VfB captain Christian Gentner and Werner wrapped up the triumph late on after a clinical counterattack.

Stuttgart start strongly

Stuttgart raced out the traps in front of 55,200 spectators in the Mercedes-Benz Arena but they were lucky not to concede a penalty when keeper Przemyslaw Tyton brought down Aytac Sulu in the box after just 10 minutes. Thankfully, as far as the home supporters were concerned, the offside flag had already gone up. Tyton’s next job was to keep out Marcel Heller’s powerful 31st minute effort. The visitors were impressive but almost went into the break behind – Daniel Didavi’s free kick flashed just wide of goal with just minutes of the opening period to play.

VfB remained in control after the break and Werner missed a presentable opportunity to open the scoring after just seven minutes of the second period. Tyton made a stunning reaction save shortly before the hour mark with the hosts going in front just moments later. Werner could have doubled the advantage moments after Stuttgart took the lead but he failed to convert when well place. As the game continued, Darmstadt looked like equalising but Tyton kept out Heller and Luca Caldirola in the final 10 minutes before Werner wrapped up the points in injury time.
