Weiler wins first game in charge of Nürnberg

René Weiler had a successful debut as manager of 1. FC Nürnburg, as his side beat leaders FC Ingolstadt 2-1. Nürnberg collect some much needed points and move up to eleventh in the table with the win, whilst FC St. Pauli made up no ground on the on the teams above them, as Thomas Meggle’s side lost 4-1 to RB Leipzig. In the third game on Sunday, Karlsruher SC beat Erzgebirge Aue 1-0.

Weiler couldn’t have wished for a better start to his managerial tenure at Nürnberg. In front of 32,000 spectators at the Grundig-Stadion, he watched his side take a two goal lead into the break against top of the table FC Ingolstadt. Ingolstadt were undefeated in the league coming into the game, but found themselves 2-0 down at half time after goals from Robert Koch in the 16th minute and Jakub Sylvestr in the 25th minute. Moritz Hartmann pulled one back for the away side in the 70th minute, but that was as good as it got for the visitors, as Weiler’s side held out for an important three points.

Elsewhere, RB Leipzig move up to fifth place after their impressive 4-1 home win against FC St. Pauli. St. Pauli could have moved out of the relegation zone with 3 points, but were behind after only 17 minutes thanks to a goal from Leipzig striker Youssuf Poulsen and were down 2-0 at the break. Alushi pulled one back just after half time to make the score 2-1, but Terrence Boyd added to his goal in the first half to restore the two goal advantage. St. Pauli’s defeat was confirmed when substitute Verhoek scored an own goal with just under 20 minutes to go.

The final game on Sunday was at the Wildparkstadion in Karlsruhe, where home side Karlsruher SC beat Erzgebirge Aue 1-0. The only goal of the game was scored by Karlsruher midfielder Dimitrij Nazarov in the 74th minute. The result sees Karlsruher FC remain in 6th place, but only one point off the promotion places. But for Aue, they remain in 16th place and are sitting dangerously close to the relegation zone.
