Villarreal end Leverkusen's European run

Bayer Leverkusen have once again bowed out of Europe against Villarreal. After the 2-0 defeat away from home, the two sides played out a 0-0 draw in the BayArena. Five years ago, the Spanish team defeated the Werkself in the same stage of the competition.

In front of 20,000 fans, Leverkusen started the game well and kept the visitors at bay. In the 20th minute, Sergio Asenjo stopped his side going behind at the hands of Hakan Calhanoglu. Frey was also denied a chance to put his team into the lead shortly before the break.

Bayer missing key players

In the second half, Asenjo came to the rescue again as Papdopoulos' header was kept out. The centre back hobbled off the pitch later in the match, possibly adding to their long list of injuries. Ahead of this game, Roger Schmidt was without Ömer Toprak, Kevin Kampl, Roberto Hilbert, captain Lars Bender and goalscorer Stefan Kießling.
