VfB Stuttgart split up with coach Babbel, Gross takes over

On Sunday, VfB Stuttgart split up with headcoach Markus Babbel after the club tied 1-1 with VfL Bochum on homesoil on Saturday. The club announced the breakup on a press conference on Sunday evening.

As the club also announced on Sunday, Swiss Christian Gross takes over. Gross gets a contract until June 30, 2011.

Gross: "Back to a winning streak"

"I wish the best for the new coaching staff to make the team perform well again. I wasn't able to switch the button", Babbel said. "I want the team to go back to a winning streak", Gross pointed out afterwards.

Next Wednesday, VfB still have the chance to reach the round of last 16 in the Champions League by winning against Unirea Urziceni from Romania. Stuttgart currently only rank 16th in the German league.

Apart from Babbel, the club also split up with assistant coaches Rainer Widmayer as well as Alexander Zorniger.

On November 23rd, 2008 Babbel took over as coach from Armin Veh and led the team to third place during the last season.
