Vero Boquete: World class player in Frankfurt

She’s only worn the 1. FFC Frankfurt shirt once but the fans of the German record holders have already shown their delight at the signing of Vero Boquete, who is another international star to join the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga. “It’s a huge signing.” “Congratulations to those at FFC for sealing the transfer.” “Vero Boquete is one of the best players in the world.” And: “It’s a real stunner”: The first reaction to the signing on Social Networks were much the same.

And so far, the 27-year-old Spain international has impressively proven that this praise is absolutely justified. You can’t imagine the 1. FFC Frankfurt team without her in it. Manager Colin Bell puts his trust in his new midfielder, and he did so on Sunday in their 5-0 first leg win in the last 16 of the Champions League against ASD Torres Calcio, with Boquete scoring the goal to make it 3-0. Therefore, the situation going into the second leg on Wednesday (15:00 CET) in Sardinia is outstanding. No one is in doubt that they will qualify.

“We can’t miss out on the quarter finals”

“After the result in the first leg and when you take into consideration how one-sided the game was, we are the clear favourites and we can’t miss out on the quarter finals,” said Boquete. “However, it would be wrong for us to sit back and not take the second leg seriously. We are already looking ahead to upcoming games and we want to maintain our rhythm, play well and get another win.”

With every win, Boquete gets a step closer to realising her biggest dream. “I want to win every title with 1. FFC Frankfurt;” said the confident playmaker. She is particularly targeting winning the Champions League after already coming close to winning the tournament. Last season, her side Tyresö FF reached the final of the Champions League against VfL Wolfsburg. But after a dramatic game and despite a goal from Boquete and two from Marta, the German side came out on top after winning the final 4-3.

“I’m playing in the best league in the world”

The Spanish international wants to make up for that with 1. FFC Frankfurt. “I’m very happy to have signed for one of the best clubs in Europe for women’s football,” she said. “Frankfurt is also a great city and one where I can appreciate internationality and cosmopolitanism. I’ve only been here for a few weeks and obviously I can’t understand German yet, but nearly everyone here understands English- even if it’s only a little bit.”

Vero Boquete, who is a close friend of Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, went on to say: “This is the biggest challenge of my career so far to play in the best league in the world and I am very motivated to put in my best performances in order to reach the team’s aims.”

Played for the Spanish Futsal team as a junior

It was always the case that Boquete fought for her goals, under the motto: problems are there in order to be solved. The best example of this can be seen when you look back at when she was a junior. The rules in Spain didn’t allow boys and girls to play in the same team and therefore Boquete’s father and the President of her first club discussed this with the national federation for so long that it led to a change in the law. She played with boys for nine years, and during this time, she learnt how to hold her own on the pitch.

Therefore, her path forward was predetermined. As a junior, she made it into the Spanish Futsal team but then she decided that she wanted to play football on a bigger pitch. And she did so with success: the studied teacher eventually became one of the top players in women’s football. Her goal celebration is famous: she puts her right hand with spread fingers on her face to symbolise an octopus from her home Santiago de Compostela, which is where her parents still live and is where they follow everything that their daughter is doing in Germany.

People in Frankfurt are happy as they are realising that the transfer did actually happen. Manager Colin Bell is raving about the newest member of his already high-quality squad. “Vero Boquete personifies every style of football that we want to play with her quick, dynamic and technical game,” said the 53-year-old. Up until now, Boquete has always done her own thing. And in her first few weeks in Frankfurt, she stayed true to her principles. Now, all that is missing is the biggest trophy of them all. And she has already taken her first few steps to achieving it.

The next highlight on the agenda is next year’s World Cup in Canada. Spain have qualified for the tournament for the first time ever and that’s also thanks to Vero Boquete. “I’m already looking forward to the tournament with anticipation,” said the Iberian star. “The tournament is a unique opportunity to make women’s football more popular in Spain as we are in the public eye for a few weeks. We won’t be under any pressure though as we will be the rookies of the tournament.”

But that doesn’t mean that Boquete will go to Canada with no ambitions. That’s not part of her character. In fact, she’s looking even further ahead: “The best four European teams qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio- and why shouldn’t we be looking to achieve that? But the first aim is to get past the group stage.”
