Unwanted record: Hummels on par with Schalke quintet

The DFB-Pokal is a competition with a long tradition. If you take into consideration the Tschammer Cup that came before, the cup competition has been going on for 82 years. On August 11th the DFB-Pokal will embark on its 75th season and to celebrate, DFB.de digs up 75 remarkable facts.

1935: Eintracht Bad Kreuznach face SV Waldhof Mannheim in the first ever cup match on August 18th 1935. SV Waldhof wins 6-1.

1935: Hertha BSC need extra time to see off VfL Bitterfeld, eventually winning 2-1. It will turn out to be a bad omen. In the 2017 quarter final against Borussia Dortmund, Hertha crashed out after extra time (3-4) for the 51st time – a cup record.

1935: The first-round match against Elsterberger BC and 1. SV Jena finishes 4-4, leading to the first ever cup play-off. Jena wins it 4-2.

1936: The only year in which no final is held. The game is eventually played on January 3rd 1937. Outsiders VfB Leipzig defeat Schalke 2-1.

1937: FC Schalke 04 become the first team to win the league-cup double. They beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1 in Köln’s Müngersdorfer Stadion. Ernst Kalwitzki and Fritz Szepan score the goals for Schalke.

1938: On August 28th 1938, Dresdner SC thump Preußen Greppin 13-0. Helmut Schön scores seven times, setting a cup record. Only Ernst Willimowksi (1869 München) and Dieter Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart) have matched it since, in 1942 and 1978.

1939: On January 8th, 1939 Rapid Vienna become the first club outside Germany’s current borders to win the cup, beating FSV Frankfurt 3-1. Three years later First Vienna FC repeat the feat, winning 3-2 (aet) against Luftwaffen-Sport-Verein Hamburg.

1941: Dresdner SC become the first team to retain the cup after beating Schalke 04 2-1 on November 2nd 1941. The club had won also won in 1940, triumphing against 1. FC Nürnberg.

1942: Ernst Kalwitzki, Ernst Kuzorra, Fritz Szepan, Hans Bornemann and Otto Schweisfurth of Schalke lose the cup final for the fourth time on November 15th 1942. (They also lost in 1935, 1936, 1941 and 1942). Mats Hummels matched the record in 2016, having also lost in 2008, 2014 and 2015.
