Under-21s in focus: Malli and Arnold in European Championship form

The second half of the Bundesliga season also signals the beginning of an important year for Germany’s Under-21s, with the European Championships to follow later in the year. Horst Hrubesch’s side will take on Italy in a friendly on 27th March in Paderborn, before they travel to the Czech Republic for the tournament between 17th and 30th June.

The players will all be wanting to impress and show what they can do on the Bundesliga stage. Under-21s in focus is a new series where every Tuesday, up until the European Championships, DFB.de will take a look at the players and their performances with their respective clubs.

Pass accuracy as good as Toni Kroos

On Saturday, Yunus Malli was responsible for creating a carnival atmosphere in Mainz on three occasions. Mainz beat SC Paderborn 5-0 and Malli took the plaudits. The attacking midfielder gave his side the lead in just the sixth minute, before making it 2-0 immediately after half time. Almost every attack came through Malli, as he knew exactly when to change the tempo of the game. Malli ended up winning Man of the Match after also assisting the third goal, which was scored by de Blasis, as his side came away with three important points.

VfL Wolfsburg overcame unbeaten Bayern, which included a strong performance in holding midfield from Maximilian Arnold. The 20-year-old ran 12.25 kilometres against the German record holders, which was the longest distance ran by any player on the pitch and his ball distribution was also very successful. He had a pass accuracy of 86.86%, which is the same as World Champion Toni Kroos. Two of his passes led to goals as the Wolves ran out 4-1 winners. His manager, Dieter Hecking, was also full of praise for Arnold: “It would be hard for someone to take his place in the side.”

Meyer wins in milestone game

Max Meyer and FC Schalke 04 had a tough nut to crack on Saturday. Hannover’s World Champion, Ron-Robert Zieler, was almost unstoppable between the posts for 96. But he then went on to concede as the Royal Blues came away with the win. Max Meyer played 90 minutes once again for Schalke, in what was the 19-year-old’s 50th Bundesliga game. He became the third youngest player to reach the milestone.

Both Meyer and his Germany Under-21 teammate, Leonardo Bittencourt from Hannover, were unable to find the back of the net. Meyer’s next chance to do so will come tonight (20:00 CET), as Schalke travel to the Allianz Arena in Munich to take on FC Bayern.
