U21s: Hrubesch selects four uncapped players

Horst Hrubesch has awarded four players their first call-up to the Germany U21 squad ahead of the final two games of the year. In total 23 players have been selected for the games against the Netherlands (Thursday, 13th November, 18:00 CET) in Ingolstadt and the trip to Prague to face the Czech Republic (Tuesday, 18th November, 17:30 CET). The players receiving their maiden call-ups are Niklas Süle (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Rani Khedira (RB Leipzig) as well as Jean Zimmer and Willi Orban (Both 1. FC Kaiserslautern).

Emre Can has recovered from an ankle injury so has been recalled to the squad. Can started for Liverpool in the Champions League against Real Madrid in midweek. Hrubesch chose not to select Joshua Kimmich (RB Leipzig) and Nico Schulz (Hertha BSC), whilst Schalke 04’s Leon Goretzka misses out through injury.

"Preparation for the European Championships starts here,” said Hrubesch. Next year’s tournament takes place in the Czech Republic and sees Germany play the hosts, Serbia and Denmark. “We’ve only played one friendly since qualification started so haven’t had the chance to try new things. The games against the Netherlands and the Czech Republic are important tests for us as well as allowing us to look at a couple of new faces.”

Germany have two more friendlies planned ahead of the tournament: On 27th March they host Italy in Paderborn before facing England in Middlesbrough four days later. Hrubesch added: “We are playing games against some of the best European sides at U21 level, which makes for good preparation.”
