U21s duo fire Lautern into second

Two players from the Germany U21s side got on the scoresheet for 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday 16 in the 2. Bundesliga, helping to put their side in second place overnight at least. A Willi Orban brace and a further goal from Jean Zimmer ensured a 3-0 win for the Red Devils against last-placed Erzgebirge Aue. FCK now have 28 points to their name, meaning only Braunschweig (26) can push them down to third, should Eintracht record a win against Karlsruher SC on Sunday.

SV Darmstadt currently occupy third spot following their 0-0 draw with SpVgg Greuther Fürth on

Saturday. The newly promoted side are now seven competitive games without defeat. Meanwhile, promotion hopefuls Fürth have 21 points on the board and stuck in mid-table obscurity.

FCK seal the deal in the first half

Off the back of a 3-1 win over FC St. Pauli, Kaiserslautern were full of purpose at the start of their meeting with Aue. Germany U21 international Willi Orban was on target following a corner to put the Red Devils in front after seven minutes. The visitors were struggling to deal with FCK’s dominance and were simply hoofing the ball clear. It was only a matter of time before the home side found a second and it was Jean Zimmer who netted it on his 21st birthday. Orban then popped up to complete his brace, stabbing home a Srdan Lakic free kick to make it 3-0 at the break.

There was only one side producing attacking moments in the second half too. Orban was having a field day, but couldn’t add to his goal tally, despite several decent goalscoring opportunities. Lakic also could have scored to inflict an even heavier defeat on Aue, but his effort was just centimetres away.

Little action in Darmstadt

There was plenty of fight shown in the meeting between SV Darmstadt and Greuther Fürth, but chances were few and far between. The away side opted to sit back, letting 98 dictate the play, but the promoted team couldn’t find a way through the jam-packed Fürth defence.

The game had a bit more of a back and forth to it in the second 45, but the first real chances didn’t come until the latter stages. However, neither side were clinical in front of goal when the opportunity arose and so a goalless draw was the only fair result.
