U21 head coach Kuntz: “Two wins are a must”

The U21 head coach has picked his team for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. Germany face Azerbaijan in Baku on November 9th (15:00 MEZ) and then Israel in Ramat Gan on November 14th (17:30 MEZ). Among those selected are Nadiem Amiri (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Waldemar Anton (Hannover 96), Mahmoud Dahoud (Borussia Dortmund), Thilo Kehrer (FC Schalke 04) and Levin Öztunali (1. FSV Mainz 05), who were all part of the squad that won the European Championship last summer. Felix Platte (SV Darmstadt 98) had to pull out because of injury.

Felix Ohis Uduokhai (VfL Wolfsburg), Dennis Geiger (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Aaron Seydel (Holstein Kiel) and Eduard Löwen (1. FC Nürnberg) are making their first appearance in the 22-man squad. The team are currently second in their group with six points from three games. Ireland are first with ten points from four games.

Kuntz: “Two tricky tasks”

Stefan Kuntz said: “We have two tricky away games ahead of us. We defeated Azerbaijan in Cottbus, but of course they’ll be more confident at home. Israel will be very tricky. We want to finish off the year well and take home six points.”

The U21 squad are meeting in Frankfurt on Monday, November 6th and will train there that evening. There will be a further session on Tuesday morning before the squad fly to Baku. The game in the Dalga Arena takes place two days after that.

“We have to win both games”

The U21s have an impeccable record against Azerbaijan, winning all five encounters to date. Last time round, Germany triumphed 6-1 in Cottbus after a cagey start to the game. The U21s are also unbeaten against Israel, though five of the past six games have ended in a draw. You have to go back to March 2013 for Germany’s only win against Israel. Holtby and Volland scored in that 2-1 win.

“These statistics show that Israel have a very strong youth squad,” said Kuntz. “It’s crucial for us to win both games so as not to lose ground on Ireland. This will be our attitude for these qualifiers.”
