U20s beat USA with convincing performance

The Germany U20s kicked off their Four Nations Tournament campaign with a win this Wednesday. Guido Streichsbier’s team triumphed 1-0 over the USA, with Hoffenheim winger Philipp Ochs grabbing the only goal of the game from the penalty spot (15’) on his debut.

Streichsbier praised his team, saying they “had a great attitude, we were good in the challenges and were always willing to run. Today was a deserved win as we also didn’t allow the USA to have any chances.”

Streichsbier deployed nine new players against the USA, for whom Jürgen Klinsmann’s son plays in goal. Only Emmanuel Lyoha of Fortuna Düsseldorf and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Tsiy-William Ndenge had played for Germany at this level before – the rest of the starting eleven, including captain Benedikt Gimber of SV Sandhausen, were making their debuts for the U20s.

Many new faces in Streichsbiers squad

The coach was impressed by his freshly put-together team, who dominated the game by being strong in tackles and executing good build-up play. After taking the lead through Ochs, Germany could have added another one but they missed a clear chance to double their advantage.

In total, Streichsbier has taken 22 players to England, many of them coming directly from the U19s team which qualified for the U20s World Cup (South Korea, from 20th May until 11th June 2017) at the U19s Euros this summer after finishing in fifth place. “The lads know each other well from the U19s and are therefore well-practiced together, however, being involved in the U20s set up was definitely a new experience for them,” commented Streichsbier after his team’s opener.

In their other two games of the Four Nations Tournament in England, Germany will face hosts England on Friday (20:00 CEST) in Huddersfield and finally the Netherlands on Monday (20:00 CEST) in Leigh.
