U19 Women group leaders after 1-0 win over Iceland

The Germany U19 women won their third European qualifier in Duisburg, beating Iceland 1-0 and taking them to the top of the group. Melissa Kössler scored what turned out to be the winner in the ninth minute and with that ensured Germany will qualify for the next round as group leaders.

Maren Meinert’s team showed their superiority, having 30 shots compared to Iceland’s seven. Despite countless opportunities, the Germans could not double their lead, with Lisa Ebert coming close in the 87th minute.

Meinert: “We deserved to win”

“We deserved to win. We played patiently, particularly in the first half but we were just lacking that quality in attack. We have finished top of the group with a newly put-together squad and that was our objective,” explained Meinert. She is however demanding improvement for the future. “We held on in the end after two or three dangerous opportunities for them. That should be a warning that you need to put games to bed earlier on.”

The draw for the second round of qualification will be made by UEFA in Nyon, Switzerland, on 24th November. First place qualifies automatically from the six groups of four, as well as the second-placed team with the best record against top and third in their group for the European Championship in Switzerland between 18th and 30th July 2018.
