U18s beat Italy 4-0

Germany’s U18s signed off their season with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Italy in the mechatronik Arena in Großaspach. Arne Maier (14’), a brace from Sam Francis Schreck (44’, 50’) and one from substititute Romario Roesch (53’) sealed the win in front of DFB sporting director Horst Hrubesch.

Coach Meikel Schönweitz appeared pleased after the match: “The Italians had more of the game at the beginning, but then we took control. Once we went 1-0 up we dominated. It was a tactically sophisticated game on both sides. We saw today that we have some strong options in this age group. Lots of the guys made the most of their opportunity.”

Counter attack gives Germans the lead

Schönweitz had to do without players from Schalke, Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg as these four clubs have been contesting the semi-finals of the A-Junior-Championship. The coach still named a strong squad for the final game of the season and used it to look at potential players for the European Championship qualifiers in the autumn.

The opening stages were predominantly contested in midfield, but Germany took the lead on the break in the 14th minute. Maier received the ball on the left-hand-side and put the Germans ahead.

Schreck strikes before and after half-time

The young team did well to conserve their energy in hot temperatures of around 30°C. Referee Daniel Schlager ordered a drinks break in the 27th minute, after which the Italians created their best opportunity, but were denied by goalkeeper Lennart Grill (30’).

Germany went 2-0 ahead through a mistake from the Italy goalkeeper and the home team started the second half strongly. Roesch of Augsburg hit the inside of the post, but just ten minutes later he found the net to put Germany 4-0 up. Schreck had got his second and Germany’s third in the 50th minute.
