U17s women into World Cup quarterfinal

The Germany women’s U17 side have triumphed 2-0 against Cameroon in their last group stage match of the World Cup in Jordan and have therefore qualified for the quarterfinals. After winning 2-1 against Venezuela in their opener, then drawing to Canada 1-1, Anouschka Bernhard’s team remain unbeaten after three group games. Germany finished Group B in first place and will face Spain on the 12th of October (18:00 CEST) in Amman. Giulia Gwinn (15’) and Lena Sophie Oberdorf (72’) struck for the Germany team to secure Friday’s win.

Germany dominated in the Prince Mohammed International Stadium right from the beginning of the encounter. Gwinn showed Germany’s intention with an early strike from a free kick but her effort landed on the roof of the net (8’). Shortly after though, Germany got their goal as gwinn got on the end of a great pass from Klara Bühl to score her third World Cup goal (15’).

DFB Team in control

After the goal, Germany continued to be in control of the game and at times were camped in the Cameroonian half, however, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. In the 27th minute, Cameroon goalkeeper Ange Bawoute had no problems dealing with a header from Bühl. A minute later, the Cameroon goalkeeper ran out of her goal and challenged Gwinn but Korean referee Seul-Gi Lee decided against awarding Germany a penalty.

Towards the end of the first half, Cameroon were somewhat more adventurous in their play but Janina Leitzig (Hoffenheim), who was in goal instead of Leonie Doege (Bayer Leverkusen), was never tested. Sydney lohmann could have doubled Germany’s lead just before half time but the Bayern München player’s header just missed the target (42’).

Oberdorf scores 30 seconds after coming on

After the break, Bühl had the first good chance for Germany (47’) but the Freiburg player’s shot went centimeters past the right post. Just three minutes after this attempt, striker Verena Wieder missed a one-on-one. Germany created further chances but couldn’t find a way to double their advantage. In the 59th minute, Gwinn pounced on a rebounded shot off the Cameroon goalkeeper but wasn’t able to find the back of the net.

After a free kick from Tanja Pawollek, 14 year old midfielder Oberdorf of TSG Sprockhövel poked the ball over the line to score just seconds after being subbed on. Cameroon’s only shot came in the 77th minute but didn’t pose any problem for Leitzig. Vanessa Ziegler could have added a third with two minutes to go but she fired against the side netting.
