U17s take on Slovakia in European qualifiers

Three more assignments lie ahead of the U17 national team as they continue on their way to the European Championship in Azerbaijan. Meikel Schönweitz’s team will begin the second round of European qualifiers against Slovakia in Düsseldorf today (18:00 CET).

The coach is hopeful after his side’s good preparation for the qualifiers. “The conditions are good in Dusseldorf. The team has been really focused during the training sessions so far. It is fun working with the lads; they are implementing our philosophy with a lot of enthusiasm. Every one of us wants to qualify for the European U17 Championship and we are convinced that we can do it.”

Group winners and the seven best second-placed teams to qualify

The Germany U17s will face Bulgaria on Easter Saturday (15:00 CET) in Stadion Ratingen, before playing against the Netherlands in the Paul-Janes-Stadion on Tuesday (18:00 CEST) to finish. All the winners from the eight qualifying groups and the seven second-placed sides with the best record against the first and third-placed teams in their group will proceed to the final round.

"The first match against Slovakia will be a real challenge,” said Schönweitz. “Firstly, we will be facing very physical opposition and secondly, it would be really special for the boys to qualify for the European Championship with our home fans behind us. We want to impress with hard and honest work and win our first game. The anticipation is huge.”
