U17s mark start of European qualification with a win

Germany U17s started as they mean to go on, beating Slovakia 5-1 in the second round of European qualification for the championships in Azerbaijan (5th to 21st May). Renat Dadachov of RB Leipzig, Werder Bremen’s Jano Baxmann and Arne Maier of Hertha BSC got on the scoresheet for Meikel Schönweitz’s side. Michal Kralovic scored the equalising goal in the 22nd minute for Slovakia.

Due to the fact that the game between the Netherlands and Bulgaria on Thursday afternoon ended in a 0-0 draw, Germany lead the group standings. “We are very pleased with the start - no injuries, no yellow cards, five excellent goals. The game started exactly as we had hoped, we scored our goals early,” said Schönweitz. “The opposition played very deep, but we combined well to find ways through. We want to build on this, and get the next three points on Saturday against Bulgaria. We know it will be a very different game to the one today.”

Germany race out of the blocks

They started the game very well in front of the 1,325 spectators at the Paul-Janes-Stadion in Düsseldorf, and took the lead within just five minutes. The DFB XI went on to control the match, despite conceding against the run of play shortly afterwards. They responded quickly, Baxmann restoring the one-goal lead after good build-up from Wolfsburg’s Gian-Luca Itter.

At the break, Schönweitz introduced Jan-Niklas Beste in place of Mika Hanraths, and Germany pushed on looking to put the game to bed. They did exactly that, with Maier grabbing the goal to make it 3-1. Germany did not sit back, and continued to push forward despite the comfortable lead. They were rewarded as Baxmann and Maier both found the net, making it 5-1.
