U17s lose out on penalties to Spain

The Germany U17s narrowly missed out on a place in the final at the European Championships in Croatia after Christian Wück’s team lost 4-2 to Spain on penalties after a goalless 80 minutes.

After a balanced 90 minutes, with both sides looking strong in midfield, John Yeboah let fly in the 13th minute but Juan Miranda got there at the last second to keep it out. The Spaniard then found himself in a dangerous position in front of Luca Plogmann, giving it to Moha who saw his effort blocked by Kilian Ludewig.

Jastrzembski hits the post

It was in Spain’s period of the game that Abel Ruiz had their best chance, finding himself free on the edge of the area after some neat build-up play and hitting a fierce low strike. Despite connecting well, he could only find the post. But Germany began to assert their authority ten minutes before half-time and it was Yeboah again who was causing all the problems. The VfL Wolfsburg midfielder dribbled through to the edge of the box but was unable to beat in-form Miranda.

The Germany youngsters looked more concentrated and determined after the restart. Elias Abouchabaka let fly from 30 metres and was just inches wide. Wück and co. thought they had finally made the breakthrough just five minutes later but Dennis Jastrzembski’s shot agonisingly clattered of the post.

Spain miss penalty but get the win

The Germany U17s were very much in control by this point but that clinical final ball proved to elude them. The defence held strong against a fast-paced Spanish attacking line although Plogmann had to react quickly to prevent Ruiz from opening the scoring in the 65th minute. Plogmann was there to rescue his side again just three minutes later, saving from Morey but then bringing down Jose Alonso in the box to give away a penalty. Luckily for him, Ruiz smashed his spot-kick onto the bar as it remained goalless.

The Spaniards made a final push towards the end of the match and forced the Germans to retreat into their own half. Indeed the DFB boys found it difficult to relieve the pressure and failed to keep hold of the ball. In the end, neither side was able to get that winning goal and it went to penalties.

Erik Majetschak saw his spot-kick saved by Spain keeper Alvaro Fernandez, whilst Lars Lukas Mai hit the bar and Alvaro Garcia Sgovia missed for the Spaniards.
