U17s into the semi-finals of the Euros

The Germany U17s are into the semi-finals of the European Championships in Croatia after coming back from a goal down to win 2-1 against the Netherlands. This victory has also granted them qualification for the U17s World Cup in India (6th-28th October 2017). The semi-final against Spain is scheduled for Tuesday (20:30 CEST).

It was an intense game from the start, as Christian Wück’s men found it hard to find their rhythm against an aggressive Dutch side. The first chance fell to the Oranje in the 10th minute, as Delano Ladan headed straight into the arms of goalkeeper Luca Plogmann from close-range. Almost straight after this chance, Germany showed what they can do going forwards. After good work from Erik Majetschak, Jann-Fiete Arp was sent through on goal but he put the ball past the post by centimeters.

Behind on the stroke of half time

In the 32nd minute, the Netherlands’ ‘keeper Jasper Schendelaar made a terrific stop to deny Pascal Hackenthal, who shot the ball towards the front post after a cross from the left. The Netherlands remained dangerous on the wings and that’s how the opener was created. Juan Familio-Castillo crossed perfectly from the left to Aboukhlal, whose effort found the far bottom corner (40+1’).

The DFB Team came flying out of the blocks in the second half. Dennis Jastrzembski powered his way through on the left and found Elias Abouchabaka, who was denied by Schendelaar’s quick reflexes from seven yards out (41’). Mohammed Mallahi went on a fine solo run four minutes later, but the German couldn’t find the back of the net from 13 yards.

Abouchabaka equalises, Arp wins it

Germany piled on the pressure. Their next chance came through Yannik Keitel (51’), but Schendelaar again wasn’t to be beaten. A minute later, Schendelaar’s opposite number, Plogmann, was called into action at the other end of the pitch to foil Familio-Castillo.

The game then settled into a pattern of Germany having the ball and attacking, before the Netherlands would spring on the counter. Alexander Nitzl was the next Germany player to miss the target; he headed a John Yeboah cross wide (61’). However, in the 66th minute, the DFB boys were rewarded for their persistence. Jastrzembski put the ball into the box and Abouchabaka netted from 12 yards out to make it 1-1. The game ended in dramatic fashion, as attacker Arp turned in a free kick from Yeboah to get his seventh goal of the tournament and the winner for Germany (79’).
