U 17 clinch place at European Championships

Germany's U 17 National Team has clinched a place at the 2008 European Championships in Belgium in May by beating the Republic of Ireland 3-0 (0-0) in the decisive match of the elite round of the qualification on Monday.

In Nordhorn in front of 7500 visitors in a fully packed Eintracht Stadium, Sascha Bigalke of Hertha BSC Berlin opened the score by netting a foul penalty after 48 minutes. Substitute Marvin Knoll, Bigalke's team mate in Berlin, finished the match off in style by adding two more goals in the final minutes (78, 80).

The German line-up against Ireland: Giefer - Evers, Teixeira, Pachan, Rausch - Kroos, Funk, Wolze - Sauerbier (53. Sukuta-Pasu), Bigalke (77. Jantschke), Dowidat (53. Knoll).
