Two penalties see Gladbach into semis

Borussia Mönchengladbach have reached the DFB Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2011/12. The Foals edged past Bundesliga rivals Hamburger SV 2-1 thanks to penalties from Lars Stindl and Raffael. Bobby Wood reduced the deficit late in injury time, but it was too late to find the equaliser.

It was a much-improved performance from HSV following their 8-0 thrashing against FC Bayern München last weekend. Indeed it was the hosts who looks most likely to open the scoring, when Aaron Hunt broke free in the box following a Tony Jantschke mistake, though his effort was stopped expertly by Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer.

Two penalties give Borussia the edge

Hamburg followed up with further chances but all-in-all there neither side sought to take initiative in the first half. The breakthrough eventually came early in the second half when Mergim Mavraj brought down Patrick Herrmann in the penalty area and Lars Stindl converted the subsequent spot-kick expertly.

The hosts push forward in search of an equaliser, but in turn opened themselves up to the Borussia counter attack and six minutes later they converted once again from the penalty spot, this time through Raffael.

Wood pulled a goal back for HSV in injury time, but it was too late to inspire a comeback as the referee signaled for full time immediately after.
