Trapp and PSG march on in Champions League

German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp has taken another step towards his and Paris St. Germain’s big dream of lifting the UEFA Champions League. The French champions won the second leg of their tie against Chelsea 2-1, making the aggregate score 4-2.

Adrien Rabiot (16’) scored the opening goal of the match after excellent build up from Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Champions League winners from 2012 then equalised through Diego Costa (27’), but it wasn’t to be with Ibrahimovic scoring the winner on the 67-minute mark. Kevin Trapp put in another commanding performance in goal for PSG.

Trapp was called into action within just three minutes, saving Costa’s strong shot to keep the scores at 0-0. The guests then started to grow into the game, with Di Maria threatening constantly on the wing. Ibrahimovic was the architect of the opening goal, curling a low ball across Chelsea’s goal for Rabiot to smash in despite the best efforts of Azpilicueta. Chelsea, who have been struggling in the league this season, managed to brush themselves off and grabbed a goal to level the scores on the night. Diego Costa knocked the ball past Thiago Silva, before finishing low past Trapp, whose view may have been obstructed.

Fast-paced game at Stamford Bridge

PSG put the tie beyond all doubt in the second half, with Ibrahimovic finishing well form close range after a fizzed cross from Di Maria. Just before that, Trapp had to be on high alert to deny Chelsea what looked like a certain goal and a real foothold in the tie. First he got down quickly to deny Willian, before springing to his feet to block Hazard’s follow-up – very impressive from the 25-year-old.

Benfica reach the Champions League quarterfinals

Earlier this evening, Benfica put in a good performance away at Zenit St. Petersburg to book their place in the next round of this year’s Champions League. The Portuguese champions triumphed 2-1 on the night despite falling behind, and clinched a 3-1 aggregate win over the two games. This is only the fourth time they have reached this stage of the competition.

The Russian side took the lead through Hulk in the 69th minute, but their hopes were quickly dashed with Gaitan and Talisca both scoring late on for the visitors.
