Tie against France not enough for semifinals

Germany’s under 19-year olds draw France 1-1 (1-0) to keep second place in Group B of the European Championships. The U19 EURO is being held in Austria (July 10-27). A German U19 team has not won the European title for the last 26 years.

In Ried, one of four host cities in Austria, Mesut Özil gave Germany an early lead, scoring after a pass out of the own half by Änis Ben-Hatira (5th minute).

Creating a lot of chances in the first half Germany did not manage to score a second goal to secure the victory. France came back in second half by a goal from Paul Baysse (72nd minute).

The German line-up:

Männel - Eberlein, Boateng, Feick, Höwedes - Konrad, Ben-Hatira, Sauter (84. Kruse), Schwaab (69. Falkenberg) - Özil, Tyrala (76. Schmidt)

In Saturday’s game against Serbia (8 P.M., live Eurosport), Germany need at least a draw to qualify for the semifinals. The Serbian U19 national team defeated Russia 6-2 on Wednesday.

On the day of his 19th birthday, Änis Ben-Hatira (Hamburger SV) played a perfect pass to the streaking Mesut Özil, who converted on a 14-meter shot to give Germany a 1-0 lead. It was the second tournament goal for the Schalke 04 forward.

Germany continued dominating the game, but failed to score the important 2-0. Sebastian Tyrala (Borussia Dortmund), who gave his tournament debut against France, gave away three great scoring chances (15./30./ 31.). France nearly tied the game on Paul Baysse’s header in the 24th minute.

After the halftime break, French player Damien Plessis was ejected following foul play against Daniel Schwaab, who suffered a bruise on his ankle joint and had to be replaced shortly after. Despite having only ten players on the pitch, France tied the game on Paul Baysse’s goal (72.).

German coach Frank Engel said: “We can be satisfied with our first half performance. That their goal came after a corner kick, upsets me a little bit, even though it’s obvious that players make mistakes, especially in such a fast-paced game. It’s up to us now, the game on Saturday against Serbia is the decisive moment.”
