In Wednesday night’s Champions League last 16 second leg, Thomas Müller scored his 35th European Cup goal and overtook Gerd Müller to top the list of all-time German scorers in Europe’s top competition. The 1974 World Cup winner scored 34 times in the elite European competition. Both Müllers scored all their European goals for the German record Champions Bayern Munich, who are now in the quarterfinals once again after a remarkable comeback against Juventus.
Gerd Müller did, however, score a total of 62 goals across all UEFA club competitions - in just 71 games. The four-time golden boot winner’s goals-to-game ratio, with 34 goals from 35 games in the top European competitions also appears to be untouchable - this rate of 0.97 goals per game remains a European record.
