Thomas Müller: "I don't see anything that will upset the plan"

Müller: It was what we expected of them – nothing more and nothing less. They were two good footballers playing well together. There’s nothing special about that. We won 4-0 and they played well.

Question: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that Arjen Robben is currently the best player in the world.

Müller: He scored a braced so you there’s not much you can say against him.

Question: For the game against Augsburg you and Mario Götze started on the bench. FC Bayern have great strength in depth. Who can stop them?

Müller: We hope that no one can, that’s the plan. So far I’ve not seen anything that would upset the plan.

Question: The draw for the next round of the Champions League is made on Monday. Is there a particular team you’d like to face: Paris Saint-Germain for example?

Müller: I’m the wrong person to answer that question because as I always say: “Regardless of the opposition it will be an interesting tie and we will wait and see what happens.”

With two games left to go before the winter break, FC Bayern München’s 4-0 victory over FC Augsburg guaranteed them top spot throughout the Christmas period. After the Bavarian derby ended, Thomas Müller spoke about the game, his team’s upcoming challenges and the interplay between Schweinsteiger and Alonso.

Question: Mr. Müller, you won 4-0 in Augsburg. Was the game easier than you expected?

Thomas Müller: Easier is possibly the wrong word. Even though it finished 4-0, the game backed up what we had said in the run-up to the fixture: Augsburg made it difficult for us. However, they used up so much energy doing that in the first period that they couldn’t maintain it for the entire game.

Question: What made the difference?

Müller: We changed to a 4-3-3 formation in the middle of the first half because Augsburg crowded the midfield and made it difficult for us. There was more room for us on the wings, so we adapted to make the most of that. The Augsburg players didn’t stop running in the first half and made it very difficult for us, however, that’s not sustainable for an entire game because you can’t change eleven players. Thankfully, they tired and we managed to take our chances.

Question: Is being top at Christmas important?

Müller: It means we have started strongly and picked up a lot of points early on. We don’t any prizes for being top at Christmas, there’s still a long way to go.

Question: What did you make of the link-up play between Bastian Schweinsteiger and Xabi Alonso?

Müller: It was what we expected of them – nothing more and nothing less. They were two good footballers playing well together. There’s nothing special about that. We won 4-0 and they played well.

Question: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that Arjen Robben is currently the best player in the world.
