Tah: "The Europa League is no consolation"

Tah: Yes, of course. Maybe we just lacked a little bit of luck but it’s a shame all the same.

Question: Do you see the Europa League as a consolation?

Tah: I wouldn’t say so. Everyone wants to play in the Champions League, but I suppose it’s better than not being in European competition. We must be pleased, look ahead and tick off the next few games.

Jonathan Tah featured last night for Leverkusen against Barcelona, being substituted on for the final minutes of a 1-1 draw which saw Bayer finish third in their group, dropping into the Europa League. Had they scored just one more goal, they could have reached the round of 16 of the Champions League. After the final whistle, the Germany U21s player spoke about his disappointment and the next international tournament.

Question: How do you feel after the game, Mr. Tah?

Jonathan Tah: The disappointment is great. We tried to win the game and the other result went our way. We are, therefore, disappointed, but we can’t hang our heads in shame.

Question: Were Barcelona there for the taking?

Tah: Absolutely. Everyone saw that we had chances. We definitely could have beaten Barcelona.

Question: Leverkusen were better in almost all of their group games but still didn’t qualify. What would you say to that?

Tah: We put in a good performance in every Champions League game. It’s a shame that we couldn’t score that last goal to put us through.

Question: Are you kicking yourselves now because of that?

Tah: Yes, of course. Maybe we just lacked a little bit of luck but it’s a shame all the same.

Question: Do you see the Europa League as a consolation?

Tah: I wouldn’t say so. Everyone wants to play in the Champions League, but I suppose it’s better than not being in European competition. We must be pleased, look ahead and tick off the next few games.
