Sweden, Mexico and South Korea await Germany in World Cup group

Defending champions Germany will face Sweden, South Korea and Mexico in the group stages at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The draw, which took place in the Kremlin in Russia, saw the four teams drawn out into Group F. Die Mannschaft will kick off their defence against Mexico in the Luzhniki stadium in a repeat of the Confed Cup semi-final from this summer at 17:00 CET on 17 June, before taking on Sweden in the Olympastadion in Sochi on 23 June also at 17:00. The two teams played out two fantastic ties in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup (4-4 and 5-3). Germany will then take on South Korea in the final group game on 27 June at 16:00.

“We now know our path through the tournament,” said coach Löw, who will take his team back to to Saint Petersburg should they win the group and then Samara in the semi-finals before a return to the Luzhniki stadium for the final in Moscow. The last 16 will see the top two teams in group F play the top two teams in Group E, comprising of Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia. Games against France, Spain, Argentina and Portugal are also all possible if Germany are to retain their crown from Rio in 2014.

The tournament’s opening game will see hosts Russia take on Saudi Arabia on 14 June.
