Surprising defeats for Bayern and Leverkusen

Star-studded Bayern Munich started the new season with a shock 0-1 home defeat to Borussia Moechengladbach on Sunday thanks to a mix-up between new signings Manuel Neuer and Jerome Boateng.

The visitors grabbed the crucial goal in the 62nd minute after a mix-up between Germany defender Boateng and goalkeeper Neuer. They failed to deal with a long ball and Belgium's Brazil-born striker Igor de Camargo capitalised on the confusion to fire home on 62 minutes.

Last season's runners-up Bayer Leverkusen slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Mainz 05 thanks mainly to two defensive blunders. A first-half mistake by stand-in goalkeeper Fabian Giefer and a late own-goal from defender Omer Toprak gifted the hosts the three points as Leverkusen slumped to another defeat following last week's shock German Cup exit.

Germany's Brazil-born striker Cacau warmed-up for Wednesday's friendly against the South Americans with a goal as 2007 German champions VfB Stuttgart beat Schalke 3-0 to open their season on Saturday.

Patrick Helmes scored twice as 2009 champions Wolfsburg won 3-0 at Köln. Marcel Schäfer had the final say as his late header sealed the three points before Helmes scored his second in added time.

German champions Borussia Dortmund had started proceedings with an impressive 3-1 win over Hamburg on Friday. Kevin Grosskreutz (17.) and Mario Goetze (29.) scored during the first half. Grosskreutz added the third early in the second half in front of a packed crowd of nearly 80,720. Dortmund eased off after that and Hamburg, eighth last season, pulled one back through Robert Tesche (79.).
