Sorg names U19 squad ahead of important friendlies

Things are starting to get serious for the Germany U19 side. Their two matches at the end of March against South Korea mark the start of their preparation for the European Championships in Germany (11th to 24th July). The two matches are the final two friendlies ahead of the summer and therefore represent important challenges. Manager Marcus Sorg has named his 25-man squad.

Three goalkeepers, eight defenders, nine midfielders and five attackers were named by the 50-year-old on Monday. On the 26th March (15:00 CET), the first game is due to take place, and three days later they face eachother again in Worms (12:00 CET). "The games against South Korea are very important, it gives our players the opportunity to prove themselves ahead of the EUROs."

Lots of familiar faces in the squad

So far this season, they have won six out of eight games, drawn one and lost one. They have also lifted the Mercedes Benz Elite Cup and Four Nation tournament along the way. The squad should be full of belief going into the games, even though Sorg knows South Korea are a good side: "We are expecting a very good side both technically and physically - they will push us."

There are lots of familiar faces in the squad, players who have enjoyed the limelight this season. Striker Philipp Ochs, who has secured himself a place in Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim back line, and VfB Stuttgart’s Arianit Ferati have been named. Benjamin Henrichs (Bayer 04 Leverkusen) and Leandro Putaro (VfL Wolfsburg) are two players who have enjoyed international game time for their clubs this season. Frederic Ananou (1. FC Köln), Fabian Reese (FC Schalke 04) and Cedric Teuchert (1. FC Nürnberg) will be hoping to make their debuts in the U19 side.
