Sommer saves a point for Gladbach in Frankfurt

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved a crucial point for Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Swiss keeper was impressive all night long and parried Marco Fabian’s shot from the penalty spot in the 78th minute, which was awarded on account of a handball, to keep the score at 0-0.

Both teams are not helped tremendously by the one point, but the forthcoming week will determine which way Gladbach will appear to head. Manager Dieter Hecking’s team find themselves on 33 points – four points ahead of the relegation zone, and four points behind the last Europa League place. That Europa League place is currently occupied by 1. FC Köln, but Eintracht Frankfurt, who have failed to pick up a single win in their last seven games, are level on points with 37 with them.

Borussia and their captain Lars Stindl, who recently returned from a short period of time out with an injury, began the game in a defensive mindset. There was a short phase of the game after 10 minutes where the guests had the hosts pinned in their own box, but Frankfurt were generally in control for the rest of the game.

First chance within 13 seconds: Rebic fails to make it 1-0 to Frankfurt.

And that looked promising indeed, as the playmaker Fabian attempted to execute his creative ideas to constantly unsettle his opponents. The Mexican pinged in a cross which met the foot of Ante Rebic 13 seconds in, and Fabian himself had a good chance to open the scoring in the 26th minute, and seconds before that, Taleb Tawatha headed the ball against the post, but nothing was able to come of any of the chances.

Affected by the loss of injured captain Alexander Meier as well as his replacement Makoto Hasebe, Frankfurt were not as convincing after the break as they were before it. The thick of the action took place between the two boxes, where the guests tried to limit the creative actions of Frankfurter’s playmakers as they did in the first half.

Branimir Hrgota squandered a great chance to take the lead 59 minutes in for Frankfurt, as VfL’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer got a hand to his effort to deny him. He was also there to make a save against David Abraham’s header in the 72nd minute. Oscar Wendt’s handball the meant that Sommer would be tested from the penalty spot, but again he rose to the challenge and pulled off a diving save to his right. Gladbach spent the final minutes of the game outnumbered, owing to a second-yellow for Tobias Strobl in the 85th minute.
