Serie A: Title celebrations postponed

Italian record champions Juventus Turin took a step closer to their 33rd league title, but celebrations were denied as they were held to a 1-1 draw by local rivals FC Turin in the “Derby della Mole”. Juve and Germany international Sami Khedira still hold an eight point lead at the top of the standings, with SSC Naples and AS Roma in pursuit.

World Champion Khedira was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes against Turin, who finished the game with ten men after Afriyie Acquah was sent off following his second booking shortly before the hour-mark. Juve conceded the opener seven minutes into the second half, but Gonzalo Higuain levelled two minutes into stoppage time to salvage a draw for the table toppers.

Two-horse race between Real and Barca continues

Defending champions FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are still in a fierce battle for the La Liga crown after matchday 36. The Catalans, with Germany keeper Marc-André ter Stegen, secured a 4-1 victory over FC Villareal, while Real followed suit with a 4-0 triumph against relegated side FC Granada to join Barca level on points at the top of the standings.

Real are looking to secure their first league title in five years and still have a game in hand against Celta Vigo. Four days ahead of their return leg with Atlético Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, coach Zinedine Zidane rested several key players including World Champion Toni Kroos. James Rodriguez opened the scoring with two goals inside the first eleven minutes. Alvaro Morata’s brace before half-time all but secured three points for Real. Barcelona were given a sterner test by Villareal but ultimately they were able to rely on their world class trio of forwards with Neymar, Lionel Messi (2) and Luis Suarez on target for Barca’s 26th win of the campaign. Cedric Bakambu had temporarily given Villareal the equaliser in the first half.

Draxler and Trapp record victory with PSG

Paris St. Germain still have a chance to win the Ligue 1 title in theory, after a 5-0 home victory on matchday 36. Julian Draxler and Kevin Trapp featured in the starting line-up for PSG, who cruised to victory thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani (2), Lucas, Marco Verratti and Giovani Lo Celso.

PSG are sitting in second place, three points behind table toppers and Champions League semi-finalists AS Monaco, who recorded a 3-0 victory over AS Nancy on Saturday evening. Monaco also still have a game in hand.

Sané helps Man City to big home win

Manchester City are still in the race for next season’s Champions League qualification after a clear 5-0 home victory over Crystal Palace on Premier League matchday 36. Leroy Sané featured in the starting line-up of former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola’s side, who have temporarily replaced Liverpool FC in third place.

The Reds with their coach Jürgen Klopp could reclaim third place on Sunday however, when they host FC Southampton.
